Food Packaging : Nanotechnology in the Agri-Food Industry, Volume 7, focuses on the development of novel nanobiomaterials, the enhancement of barrier performance of non-degradable and biodegradable plastics, and their fabrication and application in food packaging. The book brings together fundamental information and the most recent advances in the synthesis, design, and impact of alternative food packaging. Special attention is offered on smart materials and nanodevices that are able to detect quality parameters in packaged food, such as freshness, degradation, and contamination, etc.In addition, ecological approaches aiming to obtain bioplastics packages from waste materials are highlighted and discussed as a novel approach in modern food packaging. Nonetheless, this volume presents the advances made in biodegradable and bioactive packaging utilized for preserving flavor, nutritious ingredients, and therapeutic food compounds.Includes fabrication techniques, such as nanofiber films, nanocoating, nanocompositing, multi-layered structures, and layer-by-layer nanoassemblies based on synthetic and bio-based polymersPresents the latest information on new biodegradeable materials using fabrication of new high barrier plastics to enhance researchProvides examples of risk assessment for nanomaterials for food safety and the benefits of antimicrobial food packaging

Food and agricultural standards have recently risen to the top of both national and international agendas. Popular concerns about the power of the World Trade Organization focus on the intertwined relationships between environmental protection, labor and human rights, and the standards used to produce and supply our food and fiber globally. In the developing world, agricultural grades and standards are an important part of the reconfiguration of roles and responsibilities between various public and private actors in market reform. This original and informative collection of studies of agri-food standards in the modern economy addresses these and helps to define the scope of the emerging study of the politics of standards setting. Following an overview essay dealing with the multiple ways of thinking about, approaching and defining food and agricultural standards, eleven case studies offer a rich body of evidence that assesses the processes, dynamics and potential consequences of global agri-food standards. For all interested in the strategic use of food and agricultural standards - from those in national and international governmental agencies, researchers and others in the academic and private sector to those in the private business sector - this volume offers a broader perspective on and will serve as an important resource.

Agro-food chains and networks play an increasingly important role in providing access to markets for producers from developing countries. In developing countries companies become integrated into geographically dispersed supply networks that link producers, traders and processors from the South with retailers and consumers in urban centres and in the North. Globalization of trade and integration of supply chains lead to new demands regarding food quality, safety and health.Companies involved in global food and agri-business chains and networks face fast changes in their market and business environment. New procedures and practices for organizing food supply networks based on co-innovation between primary producers, processors and retailers are emerging to cope with food grades and standards. Optimizing chain performance asks for cooperation between all agents involved in the supply chain. Agro-food companies communicate consumers demands to smallholders to guarantee stable market access. Public and voluntary agencies may provide important contributions for reinforcing the supply-chain environment. This volume combines insights from theory with a large number of business cases to enable a better understanding of the opportunities and constraints that supply-chain integration can offer for stimulating rural development.

Managing the Historic Rural Landscape

This book addresses the rapid changes taking place in countryside management and their effect on the cultural landscape. Written by archaeologists and ecologists, it examines areas of cooperation and conflict between the two professions, considers current problems and their solutions, and speculates on the prospects for archaeology in the countryside in the 21st century. 'Agri-environmentalism' has been a buzzword since the Rio Environment Summit of 1992, but the impact of changes in policy-making reaches beyond the agriculture and ecology implied in the term, to embrace the cultural landscape. This volume outlines the changes that have taken place and reviews responses to them in the form of innovative land management systems. Contributors in government, private practice, and academia provide a lively and at times discordant discussion on the issues surrounding archaeology, nature conservation, and the social perception of the countryside.

Basic and Applied Mutagenesis

The aim of the editors of this volume is to use basic and ap plied studies in the field of mutagenesis to approach a problem of especial concern. The problem is that of the usage of toxic chemi cals, particularly agricultural chemicals, in ever-increasing quan tities in those parts of the world that feed the most people. Agri cultural chemicals that are in use in Pakistan are emphasized here. These are the same chemicals that are in use throughout the develop ing world, although the quantities of the different types that are used may vary from country to country, and from region to region within countries. A number of these chemicals can no longer be sold in Europe or in the United States, and it is often difficult to iden tify a scientific reason as to why they are sold at all. It is ironic that toxic chemicals are used as a humanitarian device to rid the world of Pestilence and Famine -- two of the Horsemen of the Apocalypse. If we do not wish poisonous chemicals to become the fifth Horseman of the Apocalypse, then we must begin now to identify and regulate the large-scale usage of toxic sub stances everywhere.
